Jennifer Cargile knows how difficult it can be to maintain hope in the face of cancer: Cargile’s own father is a prostate cancer survivor. Every day when she comes to work, Cargile can feel the hope and compassion at City of Hope.
“Patients I’ve encountered have been determined and hopeful about their battle with cancer,” says Cargile, a speech-language pathologist at our Atlanta hospital. “I truly believe it is the compassionate, comprehensive care that City of Hope provides that allows each patient and their family to remain hopeful.”
Cargile joined City of Hope in 2013. As a speech-language pathologist, Cargile is focused on helping patients achieve their personal goals around speech, language, cognition and dysphagia, which is difficulty swallowing.
Patients with dysphagia might want to eat their favorite food again. Cargile would have those patients perform exercises so they can enjoy their favorite food once more. Patients with memory loss might want to remember their daily schedule. Cargile would develop tools and strategies to improve their recall.
Cargile is a registered MBSImP clinician, which means she is trained to assess Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBS) results using the standardized MBSImP protocol. Cargile works with radiologists at City of Hope to perform MBS tests to assess the oral and pharyngeal phases of a patient’s swallow.
The MBS test helps Cargile determine the appropriate food and liquid consistencies for patients so they eat safely. It also identifies patient deficits to be addressed in therapy so patients can be on the least restrictive diet possible.
Before joining City of Hope, Cargile worked as a speech-language pathologist between 2008 and 2013. She is certified by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and is a member of the association.
Cargile earned her Master of Science in Education, from Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia, in 2008. She graduated from Valdosta with her Bachelor of Science in Education in 2006. Cargile concentrated her studies on communications disorders for both degrees.
In her free time, Cargile enjoys playing golf, cooking and spending time outdoors.
